Greetings,
Computer mail
glitches left this issue minus a column or two but I assure you they will
appear in the next issue.
Guess I’m gonna have
to start kicking butt and taking names…
Once again, as I hope
you have noticed, there have been some additions to the material covered in HotTrub@BeerBasics. I would appreciate any
comments or criticisms about these changes.
Thanks to all the
brewers and members of the press who responded to the latest “Ask The Press…”

For the chefs and
working press who subscribe… You folks are next for a question about “Holiday

AUTHOR WINS BRONZE AT
GABF FOR BEER HE DIDN’T BREW
Ray Daniels recently
took the bronze medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in the
Specialty Honey beer-style category for Ray’s Honey Rye. Daniels neither owns
nor operates a brewery or a contract brewing company.
Originally brewed in
1998 as the centerpiece of an event promoting Daniel’s award-winning book, Designing
Great Beers, the award winning beer was brewed in conjunction with Boscos’
Brewing Company of Memphis and Nashville, TN.
Daniels came up with
the concept of combining the soft, sweet flavor of honey with the spicy dryness
of the rye malt. Boscos’ head brewer Chuck Skypeck massaged the concept to
create a formulation that would work in the Boscos’ brewing environment. Boscos’
Nashville Brewing Company brewer Fred Scheer produced the beer.
As part of a royalty
agreement with Boscos’, Daniels will be one of only a handful of people who are
not brewers to have a GABF award adorning his office.

FRYER DESTROYS
BREWERY
Fire officials of the
Put-in-Bay (OH) Police Department and EMS, Catawba Island Fire Department and
the Put-in-Bay Fire Department say little could be done about the fire that
destroyed J.F. Walleye's Eatery and Brewery, injuring two people on Saturday.
The owner of the bar
and grill, Bill Gross, called 911 at 3:52 p.m. to report the fire that was
triggered when hot oil spilled from an overturned turkey deep fryer. Within 10
minutes, firefighters with one truck from Put-in-Bay and three trucks from
Middle Bass Island were on the scene. In all, 15 firefighters battled the blaze
for four-and-half hours.
Stanley said
employees were deep-frying turkeys following the annual island turkey shoot.
The first person
injured was a man heating oil in a turkey deep fryer. When the oil got too hot,
several people attempted to move container and the oil spilled over, setting
the building ablaze, the fire chief said. (Editor’s
Note: How much of their brewery’s product had they consumed before deciding it
was a good idea to try to move a full, hot deep fryer? – Deven)

“LIVE RESPONSIBLY”
PROGRAM TO COMBAT UNDERAGE DRINKING ON CAMPUS
Miller Brewing
Company is taking its "Live Responsibly" campaign to campuses across
the country to help address underage drinking at America's colleges and
universities. The campaign aims to help college administrators and student
leaders encourage responsibility and prevent underage drinking at campus and
community events.
The Campus Resource
Kit, created by Miller and endorsed by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund
and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, was produced for
educators, law enforcement, local business leaders and other independent
experts who address alcohol consumption issues on college campuses.
Miller and its
distributor partners also sponsor campus programs such as Training for
Intervention Procedures (TIPS) training for servers at bars and restaurants
frequented by students, WE-ID signage for retail establishments surrounding
college campuses and an annual Driver License Booklet to assist retailers with
checking for valid identification.
Together, Miller and
its distributor partners committed more than $450,000 to local responsibility
efforts across the country through this new initiative.
The grant program has
helped distributors like Mesa Distributing Company, Inc. in Southern California
work with students and faculty at San Diego State University to develop
designated driver programs and create the Tailgate Patrol at CSU Sacramento to
help reduce underage drinking.
These grants also
enabled J.J. Taylor Distributing in Tampa help institute a TIPS program at
sporting events at the University of South Florida.

Subject: Goofs in
Buckhorn Museum review
Dear Peter,
Sharon McDonnell
goofed in her review of the Buckhorn
Museum. I visited the museum in September 1997,
after
Stroh had closed the
Lone Star plant but kept
everything else
open. The Museum was still owned by
Stroh, and you got
two free Lone Stars with your
admission (hey, it
was free beer!) The museum then
moved to its current
site in 1998.
Yours, Martin Morse

ASK THE CHEF: What
have you planned for the holidays?
============================
From:
Tball83049@aol.com
November &
December are usually good months for Galileo bar & grill, as old friends
return home for the big holidays, even though we close for Christmas Eve,
Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, 12/26 (one partner is British so we celebrate
that day too).
We will do on- and
off-premise holiday parties and usually have a fellow restaurant's Christmas
party at our spot. So we are decidedly optimistic and looking forward to the
last 2 months of the year.
The two holiday brews we will be carrying
are Anchor's and Boulevard's annually tasty releases. Plans are to pair them
with a smoked pork loin special, and an as yet unknown dessert. But we'll also
drink them at night's end, when the room is still except for the sweeping and
tallying of the day's receipts.

From: Alaskan Brewing Co. [info@alaskanbeer.com]
Subject: Re: Your Seasonal Brews...
Hi Peter - The Alaskan Brew Crew has released Alaskan Winter Ale again this
year throughout the Pacific Northwest. This unique beer is brewed with
Sitka Spruce Tips which contrary to popular misconception impart no
piney/resiny flavor or aroma but rather a fresh floral aroma. I use it
myself to make jelly so this is a favorite beer of mine. The elusive
Alaskan Smoked Porter will be released in very limited edition amounts in
early November. Another favorite of mine (I have 10 vintage years in my
beer cellar), Alaskan Smoked Porter has 11 medals to its credit from the
Great American Beer Festival as well as numerous international awards. I
can hardly wait! I have attached links to pertinent information and can
send more info if you like. Let me know if there is anything else I can do
to help. Cheers!

Subject: Re: Your
Seasonal Brews...
Here is some
information on our winter offering.
MacTarnahan's Brewing
Company is pleased to announce our new winter seasonal - Mac Frost Winter Ale.
Long, long ago in
times of old, when beer was the drink of choice for royalty and commoners
alike, a winter warmer was the most worthy companion to food and cheer. Mac Frost, a Bavarian style Dunkel Weiss
Bock, is a fanciful descendent of classic Old World Fest bier.
An otherworldly
combination of rich caramel malt, lively Mt. Hood hops and malted wheat create
a robust and satisfying brew with a spiciness that suits the season. Mac Frost Winter Ale, brewed to comfort and
kindle the soul.
Cheers!

Subject: Re: Your
Seasonal Brews...
Peter,
This fall-winter we will have our Stone
Mansion Stout. This stout is an oatmeal stout. This will be available in kegs
and bottles.
From this we will make a whiskey stout. We
have a whiskey barrel from the distillery for the lucky gallons of stout chosen
to become a Whiskey-Stout. This will be draft only at the brewery.
Around Christmas time we will have on tap
our very successful Black Raspberry Stout. This will only be on tap at the
brewery.
Soon, in about 1 month. We will try a
Elderberry Brown Ale. This will be a one-off keg. Only on tap at the brewery.
So that is about it for now. Wait till
February for the blessing of the bock and the celebration that goes with that.

GREAT INTERNATIONAL
BEER FESTIVAL & GREAT INTERNATIONAL BEER COMPETITION
The Great
International Beer Festival and the Great International Beer Competition return
to Providence, Rhode Island on November 8 and 9. This year marks the ninth year for the festival and the sixth
year for the competition, both held at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
Previously named the
Great Northeast International Beer Festival and the Great Northeast
International Beer Competition, the two events are greatly expanded in scope
this year, bringing in more beers from around the country and around the
world. This expansion necessitated the
dropping of the word Northeast from the events' names.
The Great
International Beer Festival, held on Saturday, November 9, expects to attract
approximately 5,000 people during the afternoon and evening sessions. Over 300 beers will be offered from at least
60 breweries.
The Great
International Beer Competition, taking place on Friday, November 8, expects to
draw several hundred professionally brewed domestic and imported beers and
ciders. The beers and ciders will be
judged in blind tasting panels by professional brewers. Gold, silver and bronze awards will be
awarded in style categories.
Information about the
Great International Beer Festival and the Great International Beer Competition
is available from Festivals of America: www.click2beers.com
, 401-274-3234. Brewing News.com is the
media sponsor for both events.
