Oxford English Dictionary Adds Microbrewery

Associated Press reported Thursday that the word “Microbrewery” (noun) has been added to the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, defined as: “a brewery which produces limited quantities of beer, often for consumption locally or on its own premises.”

It is just one of a series of new technical and scientific terms in the dictionary prefixed with micro- or meta-, and joins such additions as hot-link, karoshi, pitta, and “riot grrrl” ( …“a movement expressing feminist resistance to male domination in society.”).

NJ News: Triumph in Princeton, and Newton?

On Monday evening Newtown Borough residents spoke before the Newton borough council regarding the possibility that the successful Princeton brewpub Triumph will be able to open a brew-pub in their town.

The borough council met on Monday night to decide whether to approve plans for Triumph owners Adam and Brian Fitting, and partner Adam Rechnitz, to open a brew pub in the borough. An 11,000 square-foot, 150-seat restaurant/brew pub is planned for the old American Billiards Building at 201 S. State St.

Last month the Newtown Borough council rejected Triumph's plan for a 235-seat restaurant, but agreed to consider a scaled-back plan that calls for 150 seats.

In Newtown Borough, dozens of residents live on Penn and Court streets next-door or adjacent to the proposed pub. Their concerns center on foot traffic from pub patrons walking in and out of the building after 10 p.m.They're also concerned about noise from music, since Triumph features live bands on several nights.

Princeton residents who live directly behind the commercial strip on Nassau Street say they don't experience many problems from Triumph or other businesses.

As of this morning they had received permission by the council to proceed with plans for a 150-seat operation.

Stay tuned for details.

”He developed the Augsburger brand, and he and his son developed the Berghoff brand.”

”He was also involved in the Peter Hand Brewing Company, located at the old Meister Brau brewery site, marketing beer under the Old Chicago label, the last brewery remaining in Chicago until the "Micro" resurgence.”
