LATEST NEWS:

Prince Charles Campaigning To Save The “Pub”

On Monday Prince Charles, by downing a pint of bitter, added his voice to a campaign to save rural pubs by combining them with shops and post offices.

Pubs, once the focal point of most English villages, have been in decline for decades leaving more than half of rural communities in England and Wales without a watering hole as rural industry shrinks and youths go further afield.

"Rural communities and this country's way of life are facing unprecedented challenges," said Charles, who joined locals at the Craven Heifer pub in Stainforth, north Yorkshire.

"They must draw on their resourcefulness and resilience, built up over centuries, to meet changing circumstances."

(All that after just one pint.)

Euro Sure That’s Enough For One Beer?

The first euros were distributed in the Netherlands, France and Ireland on Friday, and in six more countries on Saturday. This Monday, Germans lined up at their banks to buy starter kits of the euro coins and familiarize themselves with the new currency less than two weeks before its official launch.

According to a Reuters report, “The mark's simple exchange rate against the euro -- about two to one -- makes it easier for Germans to get used to the new money than for the French, who must multiply by 6.56 to get the familiar franc price, or the Austrians, who multiply by 13.76.”

The German national identity was left unshaken however when Bundesbank President Ernst Welteke, head of the central bank, when asked what he would buy first with his euros, said: "A beer."

(A liter of Spaten Bier was 5 DM when I was in Germany in 1988.)

Endeavour Returns Thirsty Station Crewman To Earth

According to a Reuters report, the shuttle Endeavour landed under tight security on Monday, with three astronauts who had lived in space since August.

NASA's decision to bring the shuttle out of orbit was touch-and-go until the last possible moment because of cloud cover over Cape Canaveral.

The space station trio -- American Frank Culbertson and Russians Vladimir Dezhurov and Mikhail Turin – returned after a four-month stay in orbit.

"We're very glad to be home for Christmas and really grateful for all the great work everyone did," Culbertson told Mission Control after the shuttle landed. The Russian, Mikhail Turin said he was looking forward to "a glass of cold beer."

(What? No vodka!)

COFFARO BEER EXPANDS ITS MARKET

Coffaro "Italian Style" Beer, less than a year old, has announced a move outside the Garden State and into parts of New York and Pennsylvania.

Tony Coffaro recently stated, "We couldn't be more excited about bringing Coffaro Beer to New York's Southern Tier, and we look forward to being there in time for the holidays." Specifically, Coffaro is referring to the Binghamton region, or, as partner Larry Genta calls it, "Bada-Binghamton."

Also, they've crossed the state lines by introducing the beer into neighboring Bradford County, PA.

The Coffaro Beer guys recently met up with Jack Wheeler, president of JW International, a worldwide distributor of specialty baking ingredients, which includes organic grains and flour, bread mixes and concentrates, and a full line of fruit fillings and emulsions. Wheeler and his staff are providing sales and service support for the Binghamton and Bradford County, PA areas and have added Coffaro Beer to their portfolio of products.

Since Coffaro Beer was introduced to the general public in May 2001, it has expanded its sales portfolio to over 500 locations, including Shop-Rite Liquors.
