LATEST BREWERS NEWS:

More on the UB Deal
Sitaraman Shankar, Reuters correspondent in India, reports
that India's top beermaker United Breweries (UB) received an
``overwhelming response'' to its offer to sell a 26-percent
stake to a "strategic partner," the company's chairman told an
investors' meeting late on Monday.
As part of a restructuring exercise prior to the stake sale,
UB is splitting into two -- a company housing the beer business (UB) and
another for investments in the liquor business, real estate and in shares of
firms like drugmaker Aventis Pharma .
``Every international beer major has appointed a merchant
banker for the stake,'' Vijay Mallya told the meeting. Mallya said in early
April he was searching for a strategic partner that could bring international
brands to India and help UB market its well-known Kingfisher brand of beer
abroad. The list includes Heineken , Carlsberg , Anheuser Busch, South African
Breweries, Interbrew and Scottish & Newcastle.
A-B APPLAUDS NEW ANTI-DRUNK-DRIVING LEGISLATION
[PETER, FIRST SENTENCE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. CONGRATULATED FOR? PRAISED?] An A-B News Release on Monday congratulated Region
Director, State Affairs Katja Zastrow today praised Illinois Governor George
Ryan and the Illinois
Legislature for passing new laws to impose further punishments
on repeat drunk drivers. The bills were signed by Governor Ryan today and were
based on a
legislative package introduced earlier by Illinois Secretary
of State Jesse White.
Katja Zastrow,
[CF. ZASTROW'S TITLE ABOVE] region director for Anheuser-Busch said, ``We
salute Governor Ryan, Secretary White and Illinois legislators for listening to
the facts,
supporting the right policy provisions and passing the right
laws to address repeat drunk drivers.''
The new laws
impose stricter punishments on those convicted of driving while drunk with very
high blood alcohol content levels. Such
punishments include increased use of alcohol ignition
interlock devices in the vehicles of repeat offenders. These devices prevent a
vehicle from being started or
operated if they detect alcohol on the driver's breath.
In recent years, Anheuser-Busch has supported legislation
targeting repeat offenders in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin and other
states.
Look for Great Divide Bee Sting in July Bon Appetit [title
in italics]
Bee Sting Honey Ale, Great Divide's honey beer, was
mentioned in the July 2001 issue of Bon Appetit [ital.] magazine. The article,
by Michael Jackson, discussed pairing grilled foods with
beer instead of wine. He chose four
styles of beers for pairing with
four styles of barbecued foods. Bee Sting was his first choice of honey beers to accompany
"Sweet and Fruity" flavored
barbecued foods.
For more information on Bee Sting and Great Divide's other
fine beers, call Tara Dunn at 303-296-9460 or email
tara@greatdivide.com
Sam Drops Ben
From ABC NEWS.COM the report is that Ben Affleck may have
been a little too prepared for one of his jobs.
The Pearl Harbor star, who has checked into rehab for
alcohol addiction, was to appear in a radio ad with pal and fellow Oscar
winner Matt Damon for Sam Adams Beer. The campaign has been
dropped.
A company spokesman told The Boston Globe the ads are
"not appropriate," and the brewer has taken Affleck's image off its
Web site. He had been pictured holding a brewski. [cap??]
Affleck, 28, is undergoing treatment at Promises in
California, the same facility where Robert Downey, Jr., also sought
assistance.
