LATEST BREWERS NEWS:
=====================================
Interbrew To Make Bid For Beck's
Yesterday Belgian Interbrew won exclusive negotiating rights in its bid for
Beck GmbH & Co.
According to Reuters News Service, an industry source told them that, "They
(Interbrew) got exclusivity at the weekend," adding that Beck's expected a
deal to be struck in the coming months. "They (Beck's) expect to have
something done and dusted by early September," the source said on condition
of anonymity.
At up to $1.42 billion, Interbrew's bid was considerably higher than other
brewers interested in Beck's, according to another industry source close to
other bidders.
Interbrew was unavailable for comment, while Beck declined to do so.
Pabst To Close Fogelsville Brewery
The Pabst Brewing Co. will close its brewery in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania by
September 21 2001. The 500,000-square-foot brewery is Pabst's last
production plant. Jim Walter, Pabst's chief operating officer is quoted in
this morning’s The Morning Call (Allentown, PA) as saying that the brewery
will be sold to another beer company. After the brewery closes all Pabst
brands will be produced by Miller Brewing Co. at Miller breweries in Ohio,
Georgia and North Carolina.
Sam Adams Test Marketing Sam Adams Light
On Monday Rhode Island became the first market in the nation to be
introduced to the Sam Adams Light beer. The latest brand from the Boston
Beer Company “Sam Adams Light” was introduced at a blind beer tasting held
at the Parkside Rotisserie & Bar. Judges included beer aficionados, beer
lovers, and media representatives. For the record, Amstel Light finished
second, followed by Bud Light and Miller Lite (tied), and Michelob Light.

ASK THE PRESS:
=============================================================
This week I am asking members of the beverage trade press, and members of
the consumer press, for their thoughts on the following:
What was the most difficult story you have had to write about beer?
(Responses will be posted next week)
(Edited for spelling, sometimes. Essential response is unedited.)

=================================================================
PERFECT PAIRINGS:
=================================================================
This is where chefs, brewers, restaurateurs and other members of the food
service community offer their suggestions regarding a particular style of
beer paired with a particular cuisine in a particular situation.
This weeks challenge - Pair a locally produced lager style beer with a dish
that includes steamed clams, mussels and lobster and served with boiled
potatoes and corn on the cob.

BOSTON RESTAURANT WEEK
TAKE A BEER OUT TO LUNCH BEER AT "BOSTON RESTAURANT WEEK"?
Location & Time: Boston - Lunch
Price: Prixe-fixe
From Monday, August 20 through Friday, August 24, 2001, participating
restaurants will offer a three-course prix-fixe lunch menu for $20.01. at
over 40 of Boston's best restaurants. The program benefits the Anthony
Spinazzola Foundation.
Starting August 6th, participation restaurants will be taking reservations
for this event. Interested diners should call individual restaurants
directly to make reservations. The $20.01 prixe-fixe menu does not include
beverage, tax and gratuity. A complete list of participating restaurants
follows. For more information about Boston Restaurant Week, call 1-888-SEE
BOSTON or visit www.BostonUSA.com for a list of all participating
restaurants. (Go to the site and then click on the upper link marked "for
more information..." on the right of the screen.)
EDITORS NOTE: If I lived in Boston and had the opportunity to take
advantage of this event I would make an effort to pair the beers available
at these restaurants paired with the prixe-fix menu. It would be a real
chance to discover how beer can pair quite well with white tablecloth
cuisine.
