Sapporo-To-Triple- Hops Production

Yesterday Sapporo Breweries Ltd. announced that it will triple its production of hops in China with a target of 2,700 tons a year by 2003. The brewer will use hops produced in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region for both its own brewing and to supply beer companies in China, Europe and the U.S.
Production of aroma hops will rise by 40% to 900 tons, while bitter hop output will grow 500% to 1,800 tons. Two joint ventures will supply 400 tons of aroma hops to Sapporo and a total of 2,300 tons of the two types of hops to Chinese, European and U.S. companies. The Japanese beer company began growing hops in China in 1992 following poor European harvests in the 1980s. The company now relies on Chinese hops for 20% of its beer and low-malt beer products. Sapporo plans to increase hop production in China to 5,000 tons a year by 2007. Reported by Dow Jones News 11-21-00 05:21 PM  Contributed by Alan Wax.

Yesterday, Reuters Moscow office reported that Russian president Vladimir Putin and British prime minister Blair sat down and discussed the US election over a few brews. Putin and Blair said they had discussed the U.S. presidential election while enjoying their lager.  "We discussed this very important issue yesterday over a beer," said Putin."This is first and foremost an internal matter for the United States, but the dollar is a global currency and the political and financial situation of the United States affects the entire world community," he said.  Blair said the election was an issue be resolved by the United States within the rules of its own democracy.  "I don't think we need to have any worries on that score at all. Just a little patience," he added.  The two men clearly enjoyed their visit to the pub. The last time Blair was in Russia, Putin took him to the opera.
