Tuesday the PRNewswire reported that Beck's North America named John J. Lennon president and CEO effective 1 January 2001. G. Michael Mueller, Beck’s NA chairman, made the announcement at the company's annual sales conference in New York City.
Lennon comes to Beck's North America from Guinness where he was Vice President and General Manager of the Caribbean and Central American (CARICAM) markets.
Prior to that position Lennon was President and CEO of William & Scott Brewing Company, Inc., the brewer of Rhino Chasers Beer. Mr. Lennon also held positions of Vice President of Marketing for All Brand Importers, Wisdom Import Sales Company and was Group Marketing Manager of Guinness America.
On Monday the Reuters news service reported that Britain's Bass Brewers said on Monday job losses were possible following Belgian beer giant Interbrew's 2.3 billion pound takeover of the unit. British newspaper The Independent on Sunday reported that Interbrew planned to make 1,000 people redundant in Britain.
Interbrew raised up to 3.3 billion euros in an initial public offering launched on Wednesday, and is awaiting the result of a UK competition review of its June acquisition of Bass Plc's beer division, just three weeks after it snapped up Whitbread Beer for 400 million pounds. The Bass deal gave the combined group a 32 percent leading share of the UK beer market.
The 4th Annual Great Northeast International Beer Competition was held on Friday, November 10, 2000, in Providence, Rhode Island, one day before the 7th Annual Great Northeast International Beer Festival. Festivals of America produced both events and New England beer newspaper Yankee Brew News was the media sponsor.
One hundred forty-eight beers and ciders (including 18 imports) from 52 breweries and cideries representing 10 countries and 10 states entered the competition. Thirty professional brewers and several beer industry journalists acted as judges in a blind tasting format. First, second and third place awards were presented in ten categories of ales, lagers, ciders and alternative alcoholic beverages. The judges knew only the style and subcategory of each beer or cider.
