A Taste of… Roxy Rolles Magic Hat Brewing Company South Burlington, VT (USA)
Preface: Once again the kids at Magic hat have me intrigued with something called Roxy Rolles. The label, as you can see, features a red and black rendering of a rather menacing motorcyclist centered on it. At the time of tasting this beer I had no idea what was in it, or what it was about all, other than the notation on the label that it was a “HOPPY AMBER ALE”. As noted above, the sample is provided by the good folks at Magic hat, arrived in good condition and has been kept refrigerated until an hour before opening. Appearance: This is a very clear, clean red copper colored brew with a head that is well constructed and slightly tan. The glittering bubbles knit together into a rocky but not too thin head. Aroma: Initial sensation is of richly toasted barley malt soon layered with an autumnal/woodsy note. Mouth feel: The initial mouth feel is pleasantly effervescent, for such a well toned finish. There is no “flab” to this brew. Flavor: The first impression is of softly roasted grain that transforms into more of a caramel candy accent that is charged with a tangy spike of flavor that could be attributed to either the carbonation or the type of hops used. If the contest between Hops and malt in this beer were a battle of the bands the hops would win hands down for its enthusiasm, its overpowering enthusiasm. Finish: The preponderance of the hops continues in the finish. This is truly a palate cleansing beverage. A slight metallic tang at the very end is not unpleasant. Comments: The folks at Magic hat constantly amaze me. There range of beers is both amusing and entertaining. I’m never quite sure what I’m getting, but it will be interesting.
