Jubelale 2007

Deschutes Brewery,

Bend, OR (USA)

Preface: This is a sample of the Deschutes product kindly provided by the folks at the brewery. I trust it is a fresh bottling and has not been abused on its trip from brewery to “tasting lab.”

Appearance: This brew is a deep dark copper colored brew, rather effervescence with a rocky, very light mocha colored head.

Aroma: The initial aroma is predominantly caramel malt with undercurrents of deeper roasted malt.  There's not too much hops to the aroma.

Mouth feel: This is a medium bodied beer that feels slightly light in the mouth.  I guess the reason for this is a rather high hop content that hides behind the caramel and well roasted malt flavors.

Flavor: The first flavor impressions are of a not too rich medium body beer. Then the hops slowly sneak in and take over the full aroma and flavor profile.

Finish: This brew finishes off with a great deal more hops than one would first think. The finish is never sweet and yet the hops do not become overpowering. The palate cleansing property of this ale is outstanding.

Comments: It took me a while to wrap my mind around this beer. They call it "a festive Winter ale." As you can see from the fairly modern design on the label, it seems to be striving to be eclectic.

I will say that it was one of the least aggressive winter ales I have ever tried.  According to the label it is 6.7% alcohol by volume, which makes it one of the lighter beers, ales, or celebration brews on the market. The label notes that it is brewed with dark Crystal malt and “bountiful” hops.
