OLA DUBH LAUNCHED IN NEW YORK AND LONDON
PRESS INFORMATION: 14th March 2008 The latest release from Harviestoun Brewery has captured the imagination of beer experts on both sides of the Atlantic. The initial concept for the project that developed into Ola Dubh came from B.United International Inc. , Harviestoun’s US distributor. According to B.United’s President and CEO, Matthias Neidhart: “Consumers are dissatisfied with mass-produced items that are tasteless, lacking in aroma and in personality. There is a thirst for highly individual products with unique flavour profiles like Ola Dubh.” Ola Dubh (or “Black Oil”) is a deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v beer – reminiscent of the classic Imperial Porter style of the 19th century – which has been created in a unique collaboration with Highland Park, “The Best Spirit in the World” according to F. Paul Pacult. Ola Dubh is currently available in three different expressions; the initial release comprises small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 year old, Highland Park 16 year old and Highland Park 30 year old. The entire first production run of Ola Dubh has been purchased by B.United International Inc. for distribution in the USA, with the official press launch having taken place at New York’s world-renowned Gramercy Tavern on February 25th. Stephen Crawley, Managing Director of Harviestoun Brewery states: “I can’t think of any other Scottish beer that was launched in New York. The feedback we have had from the US beer writers in attendance has been great – they are already looking forward to new expressions of Ola Dubh. ” Despite Ola Dubh being unavailable outside the USA, interest has been so great that a UK launch was held at Boisdale of Belgravia, London’s iconic Scottish restaurant – recently voted Restaurant of the Year by Whisky Magazine – on March 13th. As a result, Stephen Crawley has pledged that Ola Dubh will be available in the UK through selected outlets from September 2008. Tasting notes: Retaining the appearance of used motor oil from which the beer gets its name, Ola Dubh is deep dark brown, dense and oily. On the nose there are notes of truffle oil and cocoa as well as faint smoke and heathery peat from the whisky casks. Although lighter in body than its appearance suggests, Ola Dubh is pithy, oily, salty and bitter on the palate. The finish is exceptional; burnt and bitter notes with an interplay of late hop characters, orange oil, fruity tartness and then delicate, fragrant smoke.
